A family in Amarillo, Texas, recently employed a tortilla to keep a baby bird warm until aid arrived, in a touching spin on wildlife rescue. A chilly, abandoned chick was found in the family’s yard during a BBQ and swim party. The mother moved fast, heating up a tortilla to use as a temporary blanket to keep the bird warm.
After being alerted, the Wild West Wildlife Rehabilitation Center (WWWRC) quickly determined that the bird was, in fact, a Mississippi kite and not, as first thought, an owlet. “The facility posted on Facebook, “It was a creative and surprisingly effective way to keep the baby warm.” “There are always exciting and unexpected moments in wildlife rescue.”
The little bird, who goes by Taquito now, is doing quite well. Inspired by the creative tortilla blanket, the WWWRC is now raising money for its operations by selling personalized t-shirts and sweatshirts with the picture of a newborn bird snuggly wrapped in a tortilla and the phrase “Tortillas Save Lives.”
Katie Lasher Adlong, the quick-thinking mother behind the tortilla rescue, received a lot of acclaim in the flood of encouraging Facebook comments. “You’re an amazing mother!” commented one user. “I wish I could have witnessed the moment when you chose to wrap the baby in a tortilla to keep it warm and safe.
