Chinese Police Introduce Autonomous Spherical Patrol Robot

Logon Technology, a Chinese robotics company, debuted the RT-G autonomous spherical robot a few months ago, describing it as a “technological breakthrough” designed to aid and even replace humans in risky situations. The spherical robot, which can operate both on land and in water, is said to be capable of reaching speeds of up to 35 km/h and sustaining impact damage of up to 4 tons. In a promotional film, the RT-G is seen functioning in water, tough terrain, and mud, but what really piqued people’s interest was its urban application as a type of patrol robot capable of recognizing and immobilizing criminals thanks to its suites of smart AI-powered software. It all seemed like a marketing ploy, yet less than two months after the video went viral, RT-G robots were observed patrolling alongside human law enforcement.

When the RT-G robot initially debuted, there was a lot of mixed criticism online. Some praised it as a technological marvel that solidified China’s dominance in the field of practical robotics, while others imagined the design being utilized on the battlefield to compete with traditional war machines. Critics either mocked its restricted mobility (saying that stairs and other impediments would be insurmountable) or condemned it as a knockoff of a spherical “roundbot” prototype displayed by a US firm approximately a decade ago. They certainly looked identical, and their speeds were comparable; the only significant difference was that the roundbot was remote-controlled, which was the norm ten years ago.

According to Logon Technology’s presentation, the RT-G can combat crime in a number of ways. First, its AI-powered cameras can detect disruptions or abnormalities in their surroundings, and its facial recognition software can readily identify known criminals. Then, it either summons other robots or human law enforcement for assistance or takes on the problem itself, pursuing suspects and immobilizing them by collision or firing a built-in netgun.

Although RT-G appeared to be a futuristic robot prototype, the spherical robot was sighted patrolling Chinese streets with human law enforcement just two months after its unveiling. It’s unclear whether this is a test or if the robot has become a permanent fixture, but it’s evident that China is going all out on AI-powered robotics right now.
