According to a recent study, wisdom is associated with several universal features across 16 different cultures. Everywhere from Ecuador and Morocco to Slovakia and Japan, people seem to agree that knowledge is about reflecting on oneself and being sensitive to the sentiments of others.

In order to better understand people’s conceptions of wisdom, researchers from the University of Waterloo in Canada studied people in 12 different countries on five continents. The findings, which were published in Nature Communications, identified reflective orientation and socioemotional awareness as the two main characteristics that characterize wisdom worldwide.

For example, reflective orientation entails using information, logical reasoning, and emotional control, whereas socio-emotional awareness is the comprehension of social circumstances and empathy. Both aspects were crucial to how people assessed knowledge in every culture that was examined, especially when it came to leaders, teachers, and other powerful figures.

The primary author of the study, Dr. Maksim Rudnev, expressed amazement at the cross-cultural consistency. While these qualities were important, when individuals thought of someone wise, they tended to place more emphasis on introspective orientation. Socioemotional competence by itself was insufficient for the sense of wisdom in the absence of rational thinking.

With 2,707 individuals from different regions, this survey offers important insights into the global perceptions of wisdom. People from different cultures prefer to evaluate politicians, scientists, and teachers according to comparable standards, stressing the importance of wisdom in leadership, education, and cross-cultural relationships. Comprehending these common characteristics may have profound effects on how people interact and cooperate worldwide.
