The amazing “timeless” tale of a man who was able to try on his varsity letterman jacket decades after placing his order originates from Arizona.
Due to financial constraints at the time, Jed Mottley and the jacket parted ways, only to meet nearly 30 years later during an impromptu, fortuitous trip to a secondhand shop.
When Mottley joined the varsity football team at Chaparral High School in Scottsdale 28 years ago, there was only one appropriate way to commemorate the achievement: wearing a letterman jacket.
For readers from other countries, one of the most common representations of school sports in America is the “letterman” jacket. Members of school sports teams still customarily order them individually, but the tan leather sleeves, iron-on patches, and elastic cuffs and waist became so trendy that they have subsequently become an international fashion item.
When Mottley’s turn arrived, he gathered his mother and headed to a nearby store to acquire his.
The bad news was that the family didn’t have enough money when the personalised garment was ready.
Even though Jed understood, he was nevertheless upset, a sentiment that lingered for years as he saw his teammates dance around the campus wearing their own letterman jackets.
After almost thirty years, Jed’s brother Josh decided to stop by a thrift store named Veteran’s Village in Pinetop, Arizona, as he was finishing off a series of errands. He claimed to have a strange intuition that he would discover something interesting. Josh notices something bright red as he opens the door.
“Dude, let me just send you a picture of this real quick,” says Josh. When I saw it, I was astounded and thought, “Dude, that’s my jacket,” said Jed, a professional musician who currently resides in Los Angeles.
