The 6-year-old boy was discovered safely after being lost for five days in the thick tropical rainforest of Yen Bai Province, Vietnam. His family and community are relieved. Little Dang Tien Lam got lost while playing with his siblings next to a brook after wandering up a hill. Lam got lost in the wide jungle after inadvertently going down the wrong hill.
Though 150 volunteers, police, and troops conducted a large search operation that lasted three days, hope was starting to fade in the highlands. But on the fifth day, the boy was discovered beneath a cassava bush by Ly Van Nang, a farmer. Lam, looking weak and exhausted, informed the farmer that he had eaten leaves, picked wild fruits, and drank stream water to survive because he had been unable to find his way home.
Nang reported that Lam had pleaded, “I’m so tired, I can’t stand up, please carry me,” to which the authorities were swiftly notified. Lam’s incredible survival in the face of extreme odds was compared to the tale of the four kids who survived an aircraft accident in Colombia’s rainforest last year.
Like most of Vietnam, Yen Bai is densely forested, and even a short trek through the forest might be confusing. The discovery of Lam alive was hailed as a miracle by the local police, who also commended the search efforts. The narrative serves as a reminder of kids’ tenacity and communities’ commitment during difficult times.
