The gendarmerie told AFP on Friday that Fly de Vesquerie, the horse that helped Elodie Clouvel win a silver medal in the modern pentathlon at the Olympics in Paris, would receive France’s Bronze Medal of National Defense.

Ahead of the November 11 remembrances, Fly de Vesquerie will be one of four horses to receive the medal at the Republican Guard’s headquarters in Paris on Monday.

Military soldiers who have demonstrated exceptionally honorable service are awarded the Bronze Medal of National Defense.

Horses will be rewarded for the first time, while dogs and even pigeons during World War I have also been awarded such a medal.

The Olympic pentathletes had access to 20 horses provided by the Republic Guard. Fast du Pre, Dallones des Dunes, and Dicton de Vesquerie are the other three who will receive honors.

Eight years after finishing on the podium in Rio de Janeiro, French athlete Clouvel, a gendarmerie captain, earned her second Olympic silver medal in the modern pentathlon on Fly de Vesquerie.
