  • According to authorities on Tuesday, a man in Perth, Australia, managed to escape statutory quarantine in a hotel by scaling a rope made of tied-together bedsheets from a fourth-floor window.

The man’s application for admission was denied under the strict border entry regulations set by the state to prevent the virus from entering from other parts of the nation after he arrived in the West Coast city on an interstate flight from Brisbane.

Shortly before 1:00 a.m., the man was transferred to a motel for temporary quarantine and instructed to depart the state within 48 hours. Western Australia Police posted on Facebook that “he climbed out a window of the fourth floor room using a rope made of bed sheets and fled the area” on Tuesday at 17:00 GMT on Monday.

They also shared pictures of the improvised rope that was suspended from a window on the top story of the brick building and hung down to the street.

About eight hours later, police apprehended the man across town and accused him of giving “false/misleading information” and not following instructions. They did not provide an explanation for the man’s claimed behavior, nor did they reveal his identity beyond stating that he was 39 years old and had tested negative for the virus.

Because it closed its internal and international borders and enforced mandatory hotel quarantines for anyone visiting from outside or from another state during epidemics, Australia has had much fewer coronavirus illnesses and deaths than many other wealthy nations.

However, the approach has resulted in a number of escapes, such as the lady who was charged this month of kicking open a door and scaling two balconies to get out of quarantine in the northeastern regional center of Cairns.
