Ukrainians Alexandr Kudlay and Viktoria Pustovitova have broken up after 123 days of being shackled together to preserve their erratic love. They revealed their separation on national television, claiming the experiment had forced them to face some difficult realities.
In a desperate attempt to end the pattern of splitting up and getting back together, the young couple from the eastern city of Kharkiv chose to handcuff themselves together on Valentine’s Day.
From grocery shopping to smoke breaks, they did everything together during the trial, which they shared with their expanding social media following. They alternated showering and using the restroom.
Pustovitova, who at first objected to the concept of handcuffs, started crying as she talked about the most recent split.
“I think it will be a good lesson for us and for other Ukrainian couples and couples abroad not to repeat what we have done,” she said in a Kyiv interview with Reuters.
While she felt her lover did not give her enough attention while they were tied together, Pustovitova claimed that she missed her personal space the most.
“We stayed together all day; I did not receive any attention from Alexandr because we were constantly together. He did not tell me, ‘I miss you’, while I would like to hear that,” claimed the beautician, who is 29 years old.
The cuffs made Kudlay realize that the two were not “like-minded people,” and he stated he did not regret using drastic means to keep the relationship intact.
“We are not on the same wavelength; we are totally different,” the 33-year-old auto salesperson stated.
The handcuffs will be put up for sale online, and the pair intends to donate a portion of the proceeds to charitable organizations.
In front of Ukrainian TV news stations and a representative from a Ukrainian record book, they had the bonds taken off. According to the representative, no couple in the world had accomplished this.
