Currently offered in seven retail stores in southern Japan’s Kagoshima Prefecture, the paper is widely regarded as an eco-friendly washroom replacement for the island nation.

The city of Shibushi, which started recycling disposable nappies in April by separating them from the regular trash streams, led the initiative along with the nearby town of Osaki.

The two cities gathered 98 tonnes of used nappies and other hygiene goods in that first year. The Poppy Paper Company’s facility in Fukuoka Prefecture sanitises, bleaches, and shreds the nappies into a pulp that is combined with recycled paper.

In the first two months of production, 30,000 rolls were produced. Known as Shibushi-Osaki rolls, they are being offered for a pitiful $2.70 per dozen.

According to the Mainichi, Japan’s oldest English-language newspaper, Satoshi Yoshida from Poppy Paper’s sales department stated, “This initiative could help diversify the ways to secure raw materials, especially as used paper supplies are expected to decline with the rise of paperless systems and a shrinking population.”
